What rel=profile is for? -


while doing html new template, stumbled across new meta tag

<link rel="profile" href="http://gmpg.org/xfn/11" /> 

what's for? found linking page, , through google found microformat didn't it.

in html 4.01, there profile attribute head element:

this attribute specifies location of 1 or more meta data profiles, separated white space. future extensions, user agents should consider value list though specification considers first uri significant.

it used link meta data profiles.

in html5, profile attribute dropped.

as alternative it, rel value profile used (with several advantages on profile attribute). rfc 6906 describes "profile link relation type".
